Wat-ever

I know you are probably tired of looking at pictures of wats, but take solice in the fact that the ruins at Sukhothai are prettier than the ones at Ayuttaya. It is also a nicer place to explore because the old city is separate from the new city, unlike Ayutthaya where the modern town is clustered amongst the old ruins. I think my experience was also improved by a better bicycle at this location.

Prior to being absorbed by Ayutthaya, Sukhothai was a major kingdom from the mid-13th to mid-15th century. This is generally considered to be the birthplace of Thailand and is also where King Ramkhamhaeng the Great is credited with designing the Thai written language.

I will be very brief in identifying these wats...

Wat Sorasak...

Wat Mahatat, the largest and most central of the wats...

Wat Trapang Ngoen...

Wat Sa Si... (lots of opportunities to photograph reflections of stupas.)

Wat Si Chum...

(This Buddha measures 15m in height. I hope the photo below provides some perspective.)

(And his fingers are about 5 feet tall. This is probably the most photographed thing in Sukhothai.)

Great pics. I really like the reflection of the Buddha.

Wat Sa Si? -- I don't know what Sa saw. -- sorry, couldn't resist.
