Live from L'viv

Today, I decided to try to visit the official sites in the guidebook and I think my earlier assessment was right... it is more the city that is the attraction, rather than the specific sites. I did not manage to finish the walking tour, but there were a few places that were really worth seeing, so it was not a completely fruitless effort.

My breakfast view... (I wanted to yell, "Get back to work!")
Here is more of that fixed-up and European feel that I was referencing yesterday. This part of town could be in any city in Europe.
This is one heck of a tomb.
A lot of the sites in L'viv are religious because we are in Orthodox country.
This was an interesting church with some more unique art. There was a team doing what appeared to be restoration work when I visited.
Some interesting stained glass with the floating heads.
This one wall was my favorite. Besides having St. Christopher...
... they also had this really cool mural. It looks like a basic funeral procession with some monks carrying a body...
... but notice the candle-bearing ghosts that have joined them. See what I mean about unique?
And lots of color in this church, as well.
Finding some baroque was not hard in these parts. This one is especially pastel-colored. In fact, I might say it is rococo, rather than baroque, but I am no expert.
Even the stone lions have to sleep 18 hours per day.
They don't make very good guards for the tower. This is a very typical Ukrainian courtyard and, in fact, it looks nearly identical to my hostel's.
I actually found it looking for this tiny church, with its three small domes...
... that look very cool from the inside. Sadly, the main part of the church was closed for restoration.
Now on to the coolest church I found here. It has some excellent trompe l'oeil. Take a long look at this ceiling and how it seems to extend very high.
Then realize that the columns are actually quite short and are painted on, along the contours of the ceiling.
And then, of course, there is also the intricate decoration on every imaginable surface.
Contrast that with the simple medieval wall.
I just liked this little garden.
This is what happens when you put a trolley through cobblestone.
As I said before, some of the buildings are still in need of some TLC.
But people are still trying to keep them looking pretty.
An interesting city... not at all what I was expecting to find here.

The ghosts are awesome! That is really a neat way to portray them.
